Raleigh's Miss Shaw University Crowned as Food Lion's Miss CIAA 2018
GROCER ALSO AWARDS $2,000 IN THE NAME OF MISS CHOWAN UNIVERSITY TO FOOD BANK OF THE ALBEMARLE FOR HAVING MOST POPULAR ONLINE VOTE
Today, Food Lion awarded Miss Shaw University, Briona May with its coveted 2018 Miss CIAA crown, along with a $2,500 scholarship at the CIAA Fan Fest Saturday inside the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, N.C.
May is a native of Hampton, Va., and the daughter of retired navy chief paralegal, Veda May and James May Sr. A senior, majoring in social work, Briona aspires to be Attorney General of the United States of America. She is a member of the Shaw University women's track, cross-country and bowling teams where she has maintained a stellar GPA. She also is a member of the Shaw University Honors College.
The Food Lion Miss CIAA Scholarship Competition winners are given scholarships based on their GPA, a community profile video on alleviating hunger, school involvement, interview, essay and online popular vote. In addition to May, Food Lion also awarded its first-runner up distinction to Miss Virginia Union, Cecilia Thompson.
Miss Chowan University, Lakayla Brown, won second-runner up and also received the most popular vote out of all 12 schools. Brown received 20,575 votes, which means that Food Lion Feeds will donate $2,000 to the Food Bank of the Albemarle in her name to alleviate hunger in the local community.
The CIAA is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II athletic conference consisting mostly of historically African-American institutions of higher education.
