Miss ECSU - Andrea Anstead

Andrea Anstead lives by the quote from Elaine Maxwell, “My choice; my responsibility; win or lose; only I hold the key to my destiny”. The 2009-2010 Miss Elizabeth City State University is devoted to setting goals for herself and reaching beyond higher heights. A native a Castalia, NC, she is the third of five children born to Joseph and Evangelean Anstead.

In May of 2010, Andrea will be receiving Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a concentration in Pre-Density from the illustrious Elizabeth City State University. Thriving off of her need to excel not only academically but to also help others in need, Andrea was chosen as a 2009-2010 E-MHIRT (Elizabeth City Minority Health Investigation Research) Scholar. As an

E-MHIRT Scholar, Andrea had the opportunity to visit KwaZulu, Natal, South Africa for a 10 week program to research and investigate the psychosocial effects of Type II diabetes.  Andrea receives much of her guidance and inspiration from her family as well as her church family at Castalia Missionary Baptist Church where she volunteers her time to the Helping Our People Excel program.

Following the University Motto, “Elevate Higher, Emerge Stronger”, Andrea has been a Tri Beta nominee during her entire matriculation here at Elizabeth City State University. She has participated in numerous clubs and organizations such as Student Activities Committee, Global Leadership Academy, Pre- Alumni Club, Student Government Association, Student Leadership Development Academy, Royal Court, Community Outreach Program, and a member of the Delta Chi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  While being involved in these organizations she has been awarded with several honors; the South Atlantic Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Sensational Scholarship Award, and the 2008-2009 Who’s Who Among Students of College and Universities publication for her academic excellence and outstanding leadership.

Upon graduation Andrea plans to attend dental school where she intends to become a general dentist certified in cosmetic dentistry. Andrea’s ultimate goal is to establish her own mobile dental clinics to provide adequate oral care to those in poverty stricken and rural areas. Andrea wants her legacy as a queen to not be defined by the crown on her head, but for her commitment to serve.
