Miss BSU - Chevonne James
Chevonne N. James, a native of Bronx, New York is a senior at Bowie State University majoring in Child and Adolescent Studies. She transferred to Bowie State University in 2007 and feels that Bowie has made a tremendous impact on her life. In October 2008, she was one of five grant recipients of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Education, TAG, and Proctor & Gamble Make History National Grants program. This accomplishment motivated her to start her own non-profit, called Purpose Bound, Inc. It is a comprehensive organization that seeks to provide mentorship, community health awareness and bring relief to the poor.
In the Spring of 2009, she was featured in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Crisis Magazine, for her plan to institute an unconventional way to help feed the homeless. In February 2009, she co-founded a female enhancement organization called “Sisters of Nia: Ladies with Purpose”, on the Bowie State University campus. This organization impacts the female student body by providing young women with the tools necessary to reach their full potential as confident, responsible, intelligent and respectful young women of society. Under Chevonne’s leadership, Sisters of Nia received four Student Government Association awards including “Most Involved in the Community”. She is currently working on a second grant opportunity, which will enable Sisters of Nia to impact the lives of young women in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
In September 2009, Chevonne placed in the top 10 in the Miss National Black College Alumni (NBCA) Hall of Fame Pageant held in Atlanta, Georgia.
Chevonne is honored to serve as Miss Bowie State University 2009-2010. During her reign she has met various influential people who have presented many opportunities. Chevonne believes that opportunities are fleeting, so it is important to catch them while you can! God blessed Chevonne with a limitless path and she believes that as long as she continues to set her goals, abide by his will and walk in faith, he shall grant her heart’s desires. Chevonne N. James is a visionary, who has the ambition, dedication and charisma needed to make a positive and lasting impact on the world.
