CIAA Student-Athletes Named to Pre-Season Division II All-American Team

Hampton, V.A. (July 12, 2010) – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) is proud to recognize five student-athletes who were named to Lindy’s Pre-season Division II All-American Team.

The CIAA honorees include Elizabeth City State University defensive lineman Malcolm Jenkins and Virginia Union University offensive lineman David Mims who were named to the first team, while Bowie State University’s defensive back Kenneth Turner, Livingstone College defensive back Alkeem Deloatch, and Shaw University offensive lineman Markus McElveen were named to the second team.

“The CIAA is proud of the acknowledgement received by our student-athletes for their excellence on the football field,” stated CIAA Commissioner, Leon Kerry.  “It is important that the CIAA continues to develop well-rounded student-athletes to not only be successful athletically but academically as well.

Player Information:
Jenkins (Florence, NJ) was a member of the 2009 All-CIAA Defense First Team. He topped the CIAA in both sacks (11.5 for 65 yards) and tackles (22.5 for 105 yards). His sack and tackle for loss totals ranked fifth and second respectively in NCAA Division II in 2009. He also tied at fourth in the conference in forced fumbles and twice was named CIAA Defensive Lineman of the Week.

Turner (Oxon Hill, MD) was a member of the 2009 All-CIAA Defensive Second Team. He topped the CIAA in passes defended (14), tied for third in conference interceptions (5) and ranked sixth on the team in total tackles (32).

Deloatch, (Halifax, NC) a senior defensive back, had an impressive season for the Blue Bears recording 94 tackles in 10 games for Livingstone which led the CIAA.  Deloatch also recorded eight tackles for loss, along with one sack, one interception, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

McElveen (Norwalk, CT) anchored a staunch Shaw offensive line that allowed the Bears to lead the CIAA in scoring offense (42.1 points per game) and total offense (387.4 yards a game).  

Mims (Charlotte, NC) was a first team All-CIAA and D2Football.com All-American in 2009. Last season the Panthers lead the CIAA in rushing and set a single game rushing record on October 15th against Virginia State University rushing for 490 yards. The Panther offense finished 2009 ranked fourth in the CIAA in total offense, first in rushing, and first in third down conversions.
